Interview with The Goat

Mad Vyking: Wow! Two interviews in one day. This time, we got the granddaddy of them all. It’s the all mighty GOAT! Hey there Goat.

Goat: Hello, hello. (taps on mic) This thing on? Oh boy, i get so nervous doing these things. Last time I was in City Hall and I set the carpet on fire by mistake. Wait this is on? This is off the record, right?
D&G LGG 4.jpg

MV: Believe me, I looked to see if audio can be done. But it encourages reading and reading is fundamental (“The More You Know” music plays). As for the carpet, what’s happens in Atlas, well everyone found out anyway.

So let’s get this interview going. Tell us how you got into Hero Dawn?

WS-I-love-HD.jpg

G: I was recruited. I forget by whom at the moment though, but i think it was Grodin, Yeah, it was Grodin now that I think of it. I was playing solo a lot when i started the game. He helped me out a couple of times before asking me to join the SG.

Grodin-Council.jpg

MV: So the burning question, how did you become one the leaders of Hero Dawn?

G: Well they wanted an odd number of captains to rule the SG for voting on things. When I joined, they were one or two short of the number they wanted to have. So they told the SG members they would have a upcoming vote for people who wanted the job and gave us time to get to know the SG before voting. I won my seat by 1 vote and that vote was by the player I was running against for the seat. Thanks No Blank Hank.

MV: Now Shwan told me of how you got the reins again with Doomie. Doomie added to it. Let’s get your side of that moment.

G: You mean the reforming of the SG i did with Doomie?

MV: Exactly.

G: After a bit of drama in Hero Dawn around the two year mark, I left the SG and headed for the Villain side of the game to start anew but with a dark side. Oh boy, did I find the dark side!! There was this Evil Villain there by the Name of DOOM! Not That Doctor guy either much meaner!! And she, Yeah i know it was girl, had a great VG going at the time. I was impressed to say the least! We did some badging together and became good friends. After mastering the red side, we came over to the blue side. She need a little reforming at first. You know how a evil villain can be around a group of heroes, right?! Well that was the start of the Hero Dawn reform and a truly great friendship.

Therapy Redo progress 3.jpg

MV: And from there, Hero Dawn started a new growth. Now you have mention several times when the group, like the tide, rose and receded. but you ,along with Doomie and Shwan, got Hero Dawn not only number one on Virtue but all of the servers. A nice talking point for the future.

G: Indeed! I like to think we did what the heart of the game was all about: starting in a city with no friends, not knowing of how things work, going around and making friends, building a SG, making that SG great, building a name for yourself and helping others with what you have learned and becoming the best hero you can be.

MV: Now i will say this, you were the diplomat of the group. I remember when things happened and several members (myself included) were wanting blood, you were the calmer head. I have heard rumors of you losing but never seen it.

G: That a question or a statement? LOL.

((Pulls gun out)) Answer my question!!!

MV: (Holds hands up) So have to ask how did you keep the calmer head in those situations?

G: Just was myself is all I can say about that. That and I always wanted the name of Hero Dawn to be in a good light with the players around us and for our members.

MV: Now there were many events Hero Dawn done during the time period. Which ones stuck out the most?

G: For me it is the very 1st event me and Doomie did as leaders of the SG. The Hero Dawn Bash! A eight hour event!

herodawn_flyer 2.jpg

MV: Eight hours? Now that’s determination. Of course my biggest event memory was the costume contests. I remember you and Doc asking me to add trivia to it to change it up. We actually raised the bar on contests with it. Add you as a DJ and it wasn’t a contest it was a weekly event.

G: Yeah six to eight hours on that 1st event is was long! The weekly event as it was called was pretty amazing too.

MV: At the Game Show contest, we added “Go for the Goat”: the bonus round for the top three. Turned out to be a battle cry at contests.

G: That was a bit odd for me at first! Players shouting your name over and over again. LOL but it was fun.

MV: You knew this question was coming. Tell us what happened to you on those two fateful days. The announcement of the closing and the actual closing.

G: You can ask me anything you’d like after all this time and you really want to know where I was at the end?

MV: I did ask the others. Only fair.

G: I was online the day the post was made on the website, and the day the game went offline I was in Atlas Park 33!! Not very exciting I know LOL.

MV: Well, with the books (on KIndle. Look for Hero Dawn: Rise of the Powers) and the stories I did for the website I saw people having the flashbacks and others not involved with Hero dawn got a feel of the group. With you and Doomie being all in them you get to give your opinion on them as well :)

G: I’ve always been a big fan of art in lots of forms. I myself can’t write that well, but I like to play with coloring art and other media related items. So I do indeed love the books and the style of art that goes into them. Not to mention I love the covers you have for them!!

MV: Well you helped plug the book so i will plug your YouTube channel

https://www.youtube.com/user/MrGoat100

G: LOL thanks, but it just stuff I’ve done while trying to learn some of the programs. Nothing too special.

MV: Doomie said you are on Secret World, but you tried other games while you bide time for the spiritual successor.

G: Yeah, at the moment I’m on Secret World, but it has a bit of a shortage of content and the upcoming content has been pushed back a number of times already so I don’t know how much longer I’ll stick around there. Before that I was on Star Wars: The Old Republic. That game was fun and had some very neat points to it. But I’m just not a huge Star Wars fan and I played most of the solo content before leaving it. DC Online looks great but the controls for movement and the like are just to weird for me to get a grip on. Champions online just is... well Champions LOL.

MV: Now you been watch all the spiritual successors, Any favorites?

G: At the moment I’m watching City of Titans, the Unreal Engine 4 looks very impressive! Can’t wait to see what they do with it!

MV: Well you got the last word on this interview. Anything you want to say?

G: I loved the time I had on City of Heroes and won’t trade it for anything! The friends, the SG mates, all the faces you’d see on a daily basis was great! Hero Dawn was the first group I was a part of on the first MMO I ever played and it has stuck with me for almost 10 years now and I hope to see it return one day!

MV: Thank you Goat for your time and once you say it’s time i got the horn ready for the gang.

A double shot of interview on the tenth anniversary weekend of City of Heroes. Who shall be next? Stay tuned...

Herodawn.com: gone but not forgotten

Hero dawn's website has gone down.

With the group on several games waiting for the spiritual successor to City of Heroes, as much as some would like to see it stay up, reality says all good things must end.

Doomie took on the endeavour of making heroeslounge which then turned into the herodawn website. And all acknowledged she did it with style and skill.

Some added in forums with artwork, stories and videos/audio. Others with ideas and project suggestions for the group. All enjoying what Doomie created.

So for now, though not at spectacular, you have hero dawn on facebook, twitter and the blogspot here. I do have a pinterest as well which I will post all links next post.

Goat also carries the baton with his facebook and youtube channel. Again, links next post.

So until the successor succeeds, enjoy the memories of herodawn website and thanks doomie.

Interview with Doom Diva

Mad Vyking: Our newest interview is one of the reasons Hero Dawn became the group it is. Allow me to introduce the one the only, DOOM DIVA!

Welcome Doomie and thank you for your time.

Doom Diva: I am glad to be here; thanks for inviting me.

bannerdoomie.jpg

MV: Now we heard Capt. Shwan’s history of Hero Dawn. Here’s your chance to tell your side of it.

DD: What would you like to know? :)
MV: Well start with how you got in the group and how it grew to be Virtue’s number one group.

DD: Believe it or not, I didn’t start with City of Heroes - I started with the City of Villains game!  I was playing another game that we won’t mention (giggles) and a friend invited me to play City of Villains on a 3-day pass.

I tried it, made several characters and deleted most of them. I wasn’t sure it was the type of game I could get into. Then, she convinced me that if I played long enough - it would GROW on me. :)

Sure enough, after about a week, I was hooked. I played RED side for almost a year before I met another player, named Babs. I started running with him; he was well known for badge hunting in large groups.

One night, I joined a Carnie badge hunter’s group and met another player named “Goat.”  I cannot recall the name of his villain toon - it escapes me, but eventually I stopped running with Babs and become a regular player alongside Goat.

Not too long after we starting running other things besides badge hunting, and before you know it - our villain groups become coalition buddies.

It didn’t take too long after that before Goat talked me into trying out “BLUE” side. I am a villain, after all, so what you think I said? :)  It took quite some time to convince me, but eventually I went to BLUE side, kicking and screaming. ROFL

Anyway, the rest is pure poetry in motion. Once Goat got me to blue side, the ball started rolling.  A suggestion was made to “liven” up his old super group - Hero Dawn.

herodawn_600x120DT.png

MV: And from there, it grew to what it ended up on that day. I know you have seen many versions of the group as it evolved through the years. Any of them stick out to you?

DD: I think it’s important to mention that Goat and I did not see eye to eye on how the base should evolve. Put the two of us in a room together and it’s like bunny rabbits inside a beehive. :)

My group on the Freedom server
(villain side) was high in the ranks. Here was this BLUE side Hero asking me to bring back a dead super group - wow, what a request! :)

In any case, we managed to put a team together, made up of three guys and a girl. The first item on the agenda was to build prestige so we have some MONEY to play with.  The SG as it stood before me was (cough) pink and red. Yuk!

A major overhaul was in order, folks. With that said, we needed major funds to liven the place up, buy all the teleportation devices, add bins, etc. The four captains ventured together, every night for weeks, to gather the necessary funds.

Since the pink and red had to go, we revamped the entire base to be - ARCANE! :)  Yep, the first renovations took me back to the villain roots - a rock city. I think you could say, this one definitely strikes a chord because it was our first base design.

MV: (shaking image of color scheme) Well that image will stick in my head for a while :P

Moving on, you and Goat became, for lack of a better way to say it, the power couple of the group being captains during that time period. How would you say your respective style of leadership worked?

DD: Ask Goat that question and he will tell you it was a benevolent dictatorship. Me? I just went with the flow - after all, I was the ONLY girl in the bunch. How much PULL do you really think I had?  ROFL

In all seriousness, we created a membership with rules that each of the captains agreed upon. It didn’t take many nights to understand that we each had the same goal, which was to produce a family-oriented super group where everyone felt welcomed and at home.

screenshot_101224-21-41-30.jpg

MV: Mission accomplished. If I may, being one who started at the bottom, I saw you two as Yin and Yang. One was the diplomat, the other was the passion.

DD: Correct!  I don’t believe the super group would have worked without the other half (or without the wonderful members we attracted).  We were a great mixture and the family grew out of our love for the game and the people we met.

MV: Now I came in as one boom of membership ended and little did we know, another would take place. I can also say the group wasn’t a bunch of people gathered together just to have a place to store stuff. It was a family. Would that be an accurate description to you?

DD: Definitely! Our members shared, cared and constantly looked after each other. I don’t believe there was a day that went by that someone wasn’t in need, and a simple request for help had a SG mate running in to save the day. :)

MV: On that second boom, we saw not only a growth of membership but activity throughout the game for the other players not related to the group.

DD: We did what families do - we played together, we laughed on a chat server and we attended or held events.  The more we could spread our “LOVE” for the game, within the game, the better it was for all.

time_warp_games.jpg

We probably had one of the best “event rosters” of all time. It was complete with Goat turning into a DJ, you becoming a wonderfully adept event planner and the rest of the SG mates showing up to give their support.  I couldn’t ask for a better scenario!

MV: Now me and you are also in an exclusive club: The Enigmatic Eight. You started it so take it away.

DD: I didn’t start anything - I just got even! :)  I wanted to do an Imperious Task Force (ITF) and was turned down because I was a defender and they wanted damage dealers!  I merely wanted to prove that a defender WAS a damage dealer and a whole lot more! :)

The rest, as they say, is history! I created a YouTube video to show that “bleep” that I had what it took to deal the damage he was looking for, so you and I set out to set the record straight - and we did, too!

Here we go, this says it all:

enigmatic_8.jpg

MV: Well you knew this question was coming...where were you on that fateful day?

DD: The day we got the news that the game was being shut down was a day I’ll never forget. Like most, I was stunned at the announcement. Unbelieving, in search of discussions on the forums to be certain it was indeed TRUE.

I was in my home office, at my desk, head bowed - tears rolling down my face. I was stricken with the feeling of “what am I going to do now?”

MV: I had a hunch . You put a lot of your own time doing stuff for the group. Heroeslounge.net and Herodawn.com - all your design work. Videos on YouTube. No one could ask for a better captain of a group.

DD: Even now, it saddens me just thinking about it. I don’t want to see the group disappear. It’s not possible to rip a family apart that became so close - after 7 years of game play.

It’s not the design work that matters to me now - it’s the loss of friendship. The disconnected feeling of not being in touch with the wonderful people I met through the game.

MV: Then the day we hoped would be cancelled did come. The final hour. I remember all of us standing at Atlas Park 33 still defiant but accepting our fates.

DD: If you had seen me the day the announcement came through and the final hours - the toll it took on my heart is indescribable. Even today, I mourn the loss of a great game, a wonderful family and hours of contentment.

september_03_12.png

MV: Now for those who don’t know, on Herodawn.com I went to Goat and Doomie and asked if I could write stories about members of the group who went above and beyond the call of duty.

It was a hit with the group. We were never known for role playing our toons, so to see the characters come to life in story mode was exciting for a lot of people.

So much so that it was Doomie who said, then told and then used a sledgehammer to finally get it into my thick skull to start writing about Hero Dawn on Kindle. I gave a you a lot a grief asking you to edit it a few times, but how do you like the books?

DD: I think the stories are wonderful! A continuation of the family fun, the togetherness of the players, and the undying willpower of Heroes who refuse to be silenced! I especially like the “bantering” that goes on between Goat’s character and my own. :)

MV: It was only fitting to show how we were a group and a family. For most of the people, it was easy to write after talking and hearing them. Others I did a “one on one” situation so I can get a feel for the character. I still know your favorite scene was actually the one on the forums involving Hopping Hottie.

DD: Actually, I loved them all. :)

MV: With HeroDawn.com closing down , I have to get those stories on the BlogSpot now. They are not dying.

So the question burns for those who know you: where are you now and are you also waiting for the spiritual successor to come?

DD: Currently, I am playing “The Secret World” by Funcom, but it’s nothing like the family atmosphere I am used to from City of Heroes.  NOTHING will ever be like CoH, but I am hopeful that the successor will warm my heart once more. :)

MV: And I am on Champions with a few people we know, so if you want to pop in and say “Hi” it’s there for you.

DD: The easy part is getting me on the game. The hard part is syncing Goat up to the idea, but I am sure the two of us can convince him to pop in. Either that or I won’t log into The Secret World until he does!  ROFL

MV: Those damn cars! His constant reason :P

If City of Titans’ hopes are fulfilled, will you raise the colors once more?

DD: I don’t think the question is “will we” but more so “how fast” do you think we can raise them?  :)

MV: Once the word is given you know I will blow the horn on the Cryptic servers. We even got a waiting list of new recruits.

DD: All of our friends are welcomed to rejoin us, as well as new recruits who feel we have something to offer.  I’m sure, if given time, Hero Dawn will be back to where we were a year or so ago!

MV: OK final thought is yours. Anything you would like to say to everyone?

DD: Our voice chat is still open! We love company! If you would love to meet up with Goat or myself, the door is always open! Ask MadVyking for the access information and I look forward to talking with you!

MV: Thank you again Doomie for your time. I hope soon we will all be back together as one and you know where I am. Not only here but on Facebook, Twitter and a few others :P

DD: Have a good one, my friend.  Twas nice chatting!

MV: You can still see the videos Doomie made on Youtube. The channel is
