It has been an internet meme for some time...
Pirates vs. Ninjas
Just as long as its counterpart...
Robots vs. Zombies
Hero Dawn took it to the next level...

Interview with Doc Triumph
Mad Vyking: Happy May to all. Allow me to introduce for our next interview the man behind Gray Huntsman, Doc Triumph!
Hey Doc and thank you for your time.
Doc Triumph: Hey there! Good to see you.
MV: OK you seen the previous interview so first question. How did you get into Hero Dawn?
DT: I was in a SG on the Triumph server for quite a long time. That group just kind of slowly dwindled over time. The couple of us that were left eventually decided to move over to Virtue.
It was you that suggested Hero Dawn. I resisted joining a new SG for about a year, but you’re a persistent kind of guy. So, here we are.
MV: Reign of Light is how we met on Triumph and had good times. I knew you would like Hero Dawn due to they were like us: the friendly feeling, the get togethers and the overall feel of the group. Now like me you came from another server, was there a different feel as you did the switch?
DT: Absolutely. Triumph was mostly solo or random pick-up groups towards the end. Hero Dawn was an established group of veterans by the time I came along.
You and had been running missions together since my second or third day in the game. So that was pretty comfortable. We just added a bunch of other great players to that mix and it was a good time. I also got involved in a lot of the event planning for HD. It was enjoyable and added another dimension to the game.
MV: Time to give credit where it is due to the public. When people think about the costume contest, they think Goat on DJ, me on trivia, etc. But in the beginning it was you that started it and got me in it. Time to share the story.
DT: The costume contests were a fun way to get our group out and in the public. They were good for recruiting and good for the SG’s morale.
Other groups were doing them as well, I always thought they were boring. humdrum affairs. What made ours different is that we always took them a little bit further.
Basically, I would sit down and try to come up with the most asinine idea I could think of. I would pitch it to the group and somehow they would buy it.
So we ended up with themes like, “Robot Pirates vs. Zombie Ninjas.” The pirates are still undefeated by the way, Goat.
MV: (Throws flag) Hold on, here’s the official count (rustles papers). In the costume contest in the game, Robot Pirates won, but on a Facebook poll, Zombie Ninjas got a point in the win column. I think it’s time for the “War to Settle the Score”!
DT: I don’t recognize Facebook’s authority in that matter.
MV: I will be devising something to get this question finally answered (To all reading stay tuned for future posts)
Now back to the contests. You were the one to come up with trivia during the contests. It definitely raised the bar for others who ran contests to even we had people changing their own at special events. They do say imitation is the finest form of flattery so you get the kudos.
DT: I appreciate that. I don’t think it was just me on the trivia thing. If I remember, a bunch of us were on Vent one day just brainstorming. That group had some great synergy. It could have been me :)
MV: I remember signing in and you asking if I wanted to do trivia. You explained it to me with Goat listening in and it took off from there. The questions were fun and I still get comments on how good it was. Only had a couple of people give a little complaint due to phrasing of the questions.
You also become a bit of a liaison for us on the forums, Cape Radio and the devs.
DT: You did a good job with that trivia by the way. It was work coming up with those questions. There were times that you took a lot of crap and you were always graceful about it. I heard a rumor that the Internet has a lot of know-it-alls.
So, yeah, I’m not a fan of standing around in the zones and recruiting. Luckily, we had some people that were very good at it so I didn’t have to.
Instead, I concentrated on other areas like advertising in the forums and talking with The Cape. I started inviting the DEVs and the Community Team to our events. I’d just throw out invites and not make a big deal about it. However, I did invite every staff member that was on the forums almost every week. Quiet persistence pays off.
MV: I would say so. One night, three devs came on. You also got a hold of other areas like Rogue magazine: the fashion section of Virtue for a fashion show.
DT: We helped launch a player created fashion magazine, helped launch a radio station (Radio Paragon now known as Radio4Gamers) and tons of other fun community events. All of us as a group. Not too shabby.
MV: Well it’s time for the question. Where were you when the hammer fell. The announcement of the game closing and the final day.
DT: Jeeze. It’s almost like the day Kennedy got shot for the MMORPG Superhero world, huh?
I was at work when I saw the announcement.
It felt like, and still does feel like a betrayal. Not just for the player, but some good people lost their jobs over that as well.
From my perspective it seemed to be a premature death to a viable game. I’m sad that they chose to pull the plug rather than try to sell it allow it to continue in some form.
That was pretty much it for me. I stopped right around the time the announce was made, so I wasn’t there on that last day.
MV: Nor were you there for the final costume contest nicknamed the Mother of all Costume Contests. Which reminds me (Grabs certificate blows off dust) You were inducted into the Hero Dawn Costume Contest Hall of Fame for your role and for creating it. Been holding it for a while.
DT: Thanks! I’ll keep it with my Doc Triumph rookie card.
MV: Hopefully near the books being made as well. Gray Huntsman was your guy so how were the free books on the Hero Dawn website as well as Hero Dawn: Rise of the Powers out now to your eye
DT: Great read. Keep them coming!
MV: (For those reading, you can get them on Kindle) So where are you now game wise?
DT: I started Elder Scrolls Online at the beginning of April. I haven’t done the Fantasy thing since Ultima Online way back when. It’s a nice change of pace.
MV: Now you know we are watching for the spiritual successor, particularly City of Titans. If Goat gives the call, will you come?
DT: Yeah. I’ll be there when the time comes.
MV: I would be negligent if I didn’t ask this question. You preferred the pulp hero style of toons. People always wondered why so here’s your chance.
DT: My favorite comic characters were always guys like The Shadow, Crimson Avenger and The Question.
I think it’s not quite as heroic when a guy like Superman get shot at. Congratulations, you’ve just beaten the piss out of someone who had zero chance of winning right out of the gate.
Now, to be a mortal among gods and still manage to kick ass is saying something.
MV: Well you got the last word. Anything you want to say?
DT: For the greater City of Heroes community in general and the members of Hero Dawn, I hope everyone is doing well. It was over too soon. Hopefully, I’ll see you on City of Titans.
MV: An added thanks to the members of Reign of Light on Triumph including founder Crimson Electronica. If it wasn’t for that person calling for help in the Hollows, I wouldn’t have found a good friend.
DT: That’s what heroes do when someone calls for help ;)
MV: Thank you Doc for your time and I will see you again soon. Hopefully again setting up the kill of enemies in missions.
